What is Stress Relieving?

Stress relieving minimizes residual stresses in metal products, reducing the risk of dimensional changes during further manufacturing or final use. Benefits include minimizing stresses after machining and preventing unwanted dimension changes. Typically done after rough machining but before final finishing, it is crucial for parts with tight dimensional tolerances and those undergoing further processing, such as nitrocarburising. Welded structures can be made tension-free. The process may involve soaking time, slow cooling, and protective gas. The temperature range is 550-650°C for steel, and it applies to hardened and tempered parts, copper, and brass components. Stainless steels often require high-temperature solution heat treatment, and vacuum furnaces can be used. Stress relieving should be done at 50°C below the tempering temperature, with 150-275°C for copper and 250-500°C for brass.
