In 2022, Trenergy undertook a challenging and highly technical project that involved the repair and refurbishment of a KOBM (Klockner Oxygen Blown Maxhütte) Furnace for SMS Group, with the end-user being ArcelorMittal Dofasco, in Hamilton.
This project stood out not only due to its technical intricacies but also because of the massive scale of the equipment and the logistical precision required throughout the process.
The KOBM Furnace, a cornerstone of the steelmaking process, arrived at the facility in St. Catharines by barge, owing to its considerable weight of over 400 tons. Following completion of the repairs, the furnace was once again transported via barge, highlighting the complexity of both the repair work and the transportation logistics.
The KOBM Furnace is vital to steel production, using a combination of scrap steel and molten iron to produce high-quality steel. By blowing oxygen into the furnace, it reduces carbon content and removes impurities, resulting in a refined and durable steel product. Given its significance in the production chain, ensuring the furnace’s optimal functionality is paramount.
Trenergy’s role in this project underscored our commitment to excellence, combining our years of expertise with a meticulous approach to industrial fabrication.
The successful refurbishment of the KOBM Furnace not only ensured continued efficiency for ArcelorMittal Dofasco but also reinforced the importance of maintaining and upgrading key infrastructure within the steel industry.
The project exemplifies the level of collaboration and precision required to handle such large-scale operations, and we are proud to have contributed to its success.
